Winemaker’s Notes

It is that part of the year again that when you keep quiet you can year the vines growing, so it is all hands on deck to get the foliage management done in a timely fashion.

We are currently Suckering the vineyards. This entails getting rid of unwanted shoots and tipping the long shoots for the following reasons:

  • To get unhindered air flow through the vines that help prevent fungus diseases.
  • To get sunlight into the vines to prevent shoots becoming sterile.
  • To lighten the yield and improve quality.
  • To get even shoot length which improve even ripening

This process will be repeated up to 3 times on vineyards with a very vigorous growth.
